Public Interest Litigation on FGM/C, Child Marriage, Defilement, and SRHR
FGM/C and child marriage persist despite legal bans. In counties like Narok and Wajir, FGM rates remain above 60%. AHRTA has filed public interest cases demanding enforcement of the law, prosecution of perpetrators, and support for survivors. We work with survivors as rights holders and change agents, not just victims.
Data Gaps in National and County Systems
Most national databases lump adolescents under child or adult categories. As a result, critical data—such as adolescent suicide rates, access to contraception, or school re-entry rates—is missing. AHRTA supports youth-led data collection and partners with research institutions to generate disaggregated insights. We share findings with ministries and the public through dashboards, policy briefs, and social media.
Reforming Discriminatory Practices
We challenge laws and policies that require parental consent for services like contraception or counseling, and advocate for reforms that recognize adolescents’ evolving capacities and rights under the Constitution and international frameworks such as CRC and CEDAW.
